Biography
Phillip “P.J.” Barnes Jr. brings a unique blend of leadership, service, and passion for the game of basketball to the Virginia Neptunes coaching staff. A native of Newport News, Virginia, Barnes is a graduate of Bethel High School, where he competed as a student-athlete, and Norfolk State University. Following college, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army, serving with distinction in Virginia, Washington, and Kansas.
Barnes’ love for basketball has remained a constant throughout his life and career. While stationed in Kansas, he founded and coached his own program, the Royal Priesthood Basketball Team, where he developed and mentored players while building a culture centered on discipline, teamwork, and faith. His ability to inspire athletes both on and off the court continues to define his coaching style.
In addition to his military and coaching background, Barnes is deeply committed to his family and faith. He and his wife of 14 years, Shaila, are the proud parents of two children, AJ and Sydnie. On October 21, 2023, Barnes was elevated to the office of ordained Elder in the Church of God in Christ, reflecting his dedication to faith-based leadership.
As an Assistant Coach with the Neptunes, Barnes brings not only his basketball knowledge but also his experience in leadership, mentorship, and character development—qualities that strengthen the foundation of the franchise’s culture and mission.
